- Keep wine bottles upright for 48 hours. A tiny amount of pressurized air will escape and the cork will have enough time to expand back to its full, pre-corking size.
- Lay wine bottles gently on their side after 48 hours. The wine will swell the cork up and the proper seal will be achieved. The bottles remain in this position until their delicious content is consumed.
- Store wine in the dark. Wine racks are fine but they must be installed in a dark area. Above the fridge tends to be too warm as are many laundry rooms. Sunlight is the enemy! Think "cellar" but look towards the back of cupboards, under beds, bottoms of closets etc.
- Room temperature is okay - cooler is better. Temperature change, especially significant change on a repeating basis is quite destructive! Sunrooms, garages or any area that receives the heat of the day and the cool of the night are locations to be avoided. Your wine storage area does not need to be elaborate, just dark, undisturbed, with an even temperature.
- All bottles, plastic and glass, should be cleaned shortly after they are emptied. Rinse any remaining wine out with hot water. Sterilize with a small quantity of bleach and rinse with hot water several times. Soap is not recommended. Allow the bottle to air dry in your dish rack.
- Remove labels and neck caps/rings after consumption.
- Return dry bottles to your transport boxes in preparation for refilling!
